It’s not mandatory to become a member of PMI in order to register for the PMP® exam. However, becoming a PMI member allows lots of benefits to an individual such as saving the exam fee and a free digital copy of the PMBOK guide.
Once a PMP® application is accepted, there is a period of one year in which a candidate can attempt the exam three times. If the candidate fails three times, then there is a waiting period of one year from the date of the last exam taken before they are allowed to apply again.
The PMP® exam focuses on three domains: People, Processes, and Business Environment. The percentage share of each domain in the PMP® exam is as follows:
One needs to earn 60 PDUs before the date of expiration and pay the renewal fee to maintain the PMP® credential.
To be eligible for the PMP® certification exam, you must meet one of the following criteria:
Criteria 1:
A bachelor’s degree
Minimum of three years of project management experience, comprising of 4500 hours of directing and leading projects.
35 hours of project management education unless you are a CAPM certification holder. If you are an active CAPM certification holder you do not need to have 35 contact hours of project management education.
OR
Criteria 2:
Secondary school diploma (high school/global equivalent)
At least five years of experience in project management, comprising 7500 hours of directing and leading projects.

Criteria 3:
Bachelor's or post-graduate degree from a GAC (PMI Global Accreditation Center) accredited program
At least two years of experience in project management, comprising 3000 hours of directing and leading projects.
