The a,b,c of ABC (Agile Based Contracts)
The Agile Tour India 2015 concluded successfully. with the last leg of the tour for this year in Chennai on 31st Oct. The theme being Agile Program Management, it was a first of its kind experience to meet many speakers and participants mostly from the Project/Program Management and Entrepreneur communities.
I chose my topic as How to write contracts for Agile projects and programs as I have been working, reading and researching in this area for a couple of years now.
Agile Program Management is about managing a multiple set of Agile projects & teams grouped under a single program vision or goal. Such programs are mostly driven by legal contracts especially in the context of outsourcing when the customer and supplier are from two different organizations. My talk on the tour discussed some basics of such Agile Based Contracts.
Agile manifesto states Customer Collaboration over Contract Negotiation. So striking the right balance between the two elements will be the key to the success of the overall program.
How are they different from traditional project contracts:
Since both the requirements and solution evolve in Agile projects from continuous and short feedback loops, change management is an important aspect in Agile contracts. Hence such change management process should also be agile in nature, instead of the usual heavy protocols used by traditional projects.
Key sections on Agile contracts:
Along with an effective Change Management process, following are some of the other sections that need to be included in the contracts to reflect Agile philosophy: Product Vision, Initial Product Backlog (Or whatever that is known at the moment), Release Plan, Definition of Done, Payment Terms, RACI, Clauses of Termination, Customer Acceptance etc.
