How Long Does It Take To Prepare For CSM (Certified Scrum Master)?

All set to take an Agile Leadership role such as a Scrum Master? The demand for Certified Scrum Masters (CSMs) in the job market is at an all-time high in 2024. According to recent statistics, many global MNCs increasingly recognize the value of the Scrum Framework.

Perhaps you should consider getting the Certified Scrum Master certification from Scrum Alliance!  As an Agile Practitioner, the certification adds extra value to kick off your career as a Scrum Master. Whatever your background is, it’s time to start the preparations! But how long can the CSM certification preparations take? We are here to answer that!

A Quick Review Of The CSM Certification Process:

Becoming a Certified Scrum Master begins with exploring what this certification is about and what the expected outcome is. So, here is everything related to the CSM Certification Process:

Certification Provider: The certification is provided by the Scrum Alliance, a globally recognized organization promoting Scrum and Agile practices since early 2000.

Certification Process: The CSM certification process typically begins with Agile, Scrum and Scrum Master Training. These Workshops cover fundamental Agile Principles, the Scrum Framework, and the role of a Scrum Master in a Scrum Team. The interactive and engaging training sessions enable the attendees to establish solid foundational knowledge about Agile Scrum.

This course, usually a two-day workshop, is conducted by professional Agile Coaches. PremierAgile, partnering with Scrum Alliance, also offers Workshops and Courses tailored to meet the demands of aspiring Scrum Masters. Once you've completed the training, the trainer will enroll you for a test, in order to acquire the Certified Scrum Master certification.

Now, you are ready to take the final exam!

How Long Does It Take to Complete the CSM Course?

Let’s divide your preparation time into 2 segments. We will try to estimate the overall timing accordingly!

Completing The CSM Course:

The duration of the Certified Scrum Master course itself is relatively short, typically spanning two days. These intensive workshops are designed to provide focused and comprehensive Agile Training to the future Scrum Masters. In general, the duration of the courses is around 16 hours. The condensed timeframe allows busy professionals to acquire the necessary skills without a prolonged time commitment.

Time Required For Self-Study:

Other than doing the CSM course, it's important to note that you have to prepare yourself! The two-day workshop is just one component of the overall CSM preparation process. The time you invest in preparing for the course and reinforcing your understanding of Agile principles contributes significantly to your overall readiness as a Scrum Master. So, dedicate at least 2-3 hours until you appear in the final exam!

How Much Time In Total?

Becoming a Certified Scrum Master depends on your dedication and commitment. When you decide to achieve the CSM Certification, you must start your preparations!

Begin with enrolling in the CSM course. While the two-day CSM course provides essential knowledge, the time you invest in gaining hands-on experience and additional learning is equally crucial. But remember, it's a continuous improvement process and can take over 16 hours of dedicated workshop followed by 2 hours of self-study.

What after CSM?

Attending Workshops For Practical Knowledge:

After you complete the CSM Course asnd the test, you can leverage your free time by attending other Workshops online. It’s the best study resource to garner practical expertise as you attend the practical exercises. So, continue doing Case Studies and participating in group discussions to solidify your knowledge of Scrum principles.

Practice for experience:

After acquiring the certification, applying your knowledge in a real-world setting is the next step. It involves gaining practical experience by actively participating in Agile Projects and applying Scrum principles. The hands-on experience is crucial to reinforce your Learning and prepare you for the challenges of leading Agile teams.

Mentoring and Coaching:

Seek guidance from experienced Agile practitioners, Agile Coaches, or existing Scrum Masters. Mentoring and coaching sessions can provide valuable insights, address specific challenges, and accelerate your growth as a Scrum Master. Stay updated on the latest developments in Agile and Scrum by attending Meetups and Conferences. Networking with other Agilists and Scrum enthusiasts enhances your understanding and exposes you to diverse perspectives.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you're an Agile beginner or an experienced Agilist, the path to becoming a Certified Scrum Master is within reach. So, keep preparing and get the final title of the Certified Scrum Master!
