Student Mentoring Series Part- 3: Transitioning to an Agile Role - A Mentoring Session with Suresh

Introduction

We recently had the opportunity to mentor Amna, a seasoned Business Analyst with a background in project management, during our one-on-one mentoring session.

Amna shared her experiences and challenges she faced in her career progression. This discussion provided valuable insights into navigating career transitions within Agile environments.

Here, we've outlined the main ideas covered in the meeting along with some advice from Suresh Konduru, PremierAgile’s lead Coach and Mentor, on how to further her career and use Agile methods.

Amna’s Career Background

Amna has been a business analyst for the majority of her 10 years of expertise in project management and information technology.

In her prior positions, she oversaw Business Analyst teams and carried out duties similar to those of a product owner. She works for an ERP business as a Senior Lead Business Analyst right now, where her work is more in line with conventional waterfall techniques.

The Challenge: Career Stagnation and Desire for Agile Transition

Amna's firm does not completely adopt Agile approaches, making her believe that her career advancement has stagnated.

She is enthusiastic about Agile principles and has earned a Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification, but she sees few opportunity to apply these skills in her present position. She is also concerned about the perceived demotion of transferring to a Product Owner role in the local and global job markets.

Suresh’s Recommendations

1. Clarify and Expand Responsibilities:

  • Understand that roles like Product Owner and Business Analyst often overlap. Tailor your CV to highlight relevant experiences and responsibilities that match job descriptions of the roles you are applying for.
  • Do not restrict yourself to a single role. Apply for positions that align with your skills and career aspirations, whether they are labeled as Business Analyst, Product Owner, or Product Manager.

2. Adapt Your Resume for Each Application:

  • Customize your CV for each job application to match the skills available with specific requirements and keywords listed in the job description.
  • Highlight your flexibility and willingness to travel or relocate if necessary. Make it clear that you are open to both remote and in-office opportunities, depending on the company's needs.

3. Continuous Learning and Certification:

  • Build a deeper understanding of Agile and Scrum by pursuing additional learning, such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification. This will strengthen your Scrum knowledge and make you more versatile.
  • After gaining more experience, consider advanced certifications like Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner (A-CSPO) to further enhance your expertise.

4. Networking and Seeking Opportunities Beyond Local Markets:

  • If the local job market is saturated, explore opportunities in other regions or countries. Emphasize your readiness to travel and adapt to different environments.
  • Engage in networking events, Agile communities, and online forums to connect with potential employers and stay updated on job openings.

Conclusion

Amna's experience demonstrates significant problems that professionals confront when switching to Agile positions. Suresh's advice provides a road map for overcoming these obstacles, such as making relevant applications, sharpening skills, continuing education, and exploring new work areas. Amna can use these tactics to improve her job prospects and find possibilities that match her enthusiasm for Agile methodologies.
